I see a lot of trends from 2017 and 2016 carrying forwarded in 2018 as well. So here are my top 5 design trends which will make an impact in 2018:
#5 Real Photography
Designers in India are still fond of shutter stock images but that trend has changed a lot in 2017 as I saw many of the images used by international designers were real life images than the standard photoshoot images. Well why not? Don’t you want to see real people, real life scenarios, and experiences? Yaaass! There are plenty of free stock image providers out who specialize in such forte, do keep that in mind this year while hunting for images.
#4 Typography
Over the period of last few years it has grown. But for 2018 I see a lot of designers focusing on big oversized and sans serif typeface. With that I also feel that spilt type, playing around with image and placements will also grow this year. Type will rock in 2018 as well!
#3 Background patterns
I love patterns but I do also feel patterns are underrated. Huh! Not anymore, 2018 will be their year. Background patterns with geometric designs and elements are visible in many websites in 2018 already! I do feel experiment with patterns and images will also make a huge impact in 2018.
#2 Going 3D
VR and AR are here in our hands now! Apple X has changed the game all together and the apps and many platforms are VR/AR ready. Everyone is turning around their focus with emergence of this new growing platform. 3D elements in websites, apps and even images shall too grow.
#1 Micro interactions
Well they consume a really small part but they are the most engaging element from user experience POV. Profusely used in apps, I also see a growing use in web as well. Designers have started experimenting with this already! #exciting
Along with these I feel use of bright gradients ( I hope the overuse of pink and purple trend fads away soon), double exposure, duo tones, glitch, metallic elements, custom illustrations, vintage colour and patterns, gifs and animated images will be also used this year.
